“When I was working as a construction worker, I met a ten year old boy. Every morning, he would come to my worksite to sell food (like vegetables) for a little money to buy rice. I asked him, “Who do you live with?” and he told me he lived with his grandmother. Every morning, he goes to pick morning glory in the pond and scrap metal and cans to earn a little money to feed them both since his parents left to work in Thailand. He had been living with his grandmother since he was one year old.
When I heard his story, I remembered my own past. Even though my parents didn’t go to work in Thailand, they did leave my sister and I to go work in the Cambodian forest. We also had to pick morning glory and find things to sell to pay for school.
At that time, I felt lonely because I was far away from my parents and it was difficult to be responsible for earning and managing my own money for my education.”
